One of the biggest challenges is changing light. Outdoor ceremonies can begin in strong afternoon sun and finish close to sunset, while many historic venues and reception spaces become extremely dark at night. I watch those transitions carefully so I can adjust before the important moments happen rather than reacting afterward.
Audio presents its own challenges. City noise, wind, traffic, live musicians, and crowded receptions can all compete with vows and speeches. I use multiple audio sources whenever possible so the voices that matter most are preserved clearly even when the environment is unpredictable.
One lesson I’ve learned as a Los Angeles wedding videographer is that the timeline has to account for more than just the drive time between locations. When getting ready, the ceremony, portraits, and reception are in different parts of the city, traffic, parking, unloading equipment, and setting up cameras and audio can quickly take time away from filming the moments that matter most. I like to work backward from sunset and leave enough breathing room around each transition so portrait time is not squeezed into the final few minutes of good light. That buffer also gives me time to be fully set before the ceremony or reception begins instead of arriving and immediately chasing the next moment. Rather than presenting the wedding in strict chronological order, I opened the film with movement from the dance floor and a live performance by the band. Using the Live Band as Part of the Story
One of the most distinctive elements of Emily and Irving’s reception was the live band. When a band delivers a strong performance, I do not treat it as background entertainment that only needs to appear visually. I intentionally record the musicians and lead vocalist so their live performance can become part of the film’s sound and storytelling.
The band’s vocals gave this wedding film an element that could not be recreated with stock music alone. The performance belonged specifically to Emily and Irving’s celebration and reflected what their guests experienced in the room.
I used the band near the beginning of the film to create an immediate sense of energy and anticipation. The live performance also provided a natural connection between shots of the musicians, the couple, and guests enjoying the reception. By preserving this sound, the finished film feels more connected to the actual atmosphere of the wedding rather than relying entirely on music added afterward.
Lighting the Indoor Reception
The Ebell’s interiors are visually rich, but the dark wood, warm ambient lighting, and limited available light can make reception coverage challenging. Because Emily and Irving’s reception took place indoors, I needed enough controlled lighting to keep faces, movement, speeches, and dancing clearly visible.
I used a three-light setup during the reception. My goal was not to make the room appear overly bright or turn it into a studio environment. Instead, I used the lights to provide consistent coverage while preserving the warmth and character of the venue.
This was especially important during the speeches and open dancing. Reception events happen quickly, and guests move throughout the room, so the lighting needed to support multiple camera angles without distracting from the celebration. The three-light setup helped me capture clear expressions and energetic movement while retaining the darker, elegant atmosphere that makes The Ebell visually distinctive.
Using The Ebell’s Architecture in the Film
The Ebell provides several contrasting visual environments within one venue. Its darker interior rooms create an intimate and dramatic feeling, while the tall windows, balcony areas, courtyard architecture, and exterior entrance offer brighter and more open compositions.
I used wider shots during the ceremony to show the scale of the room, the architecture, and the guests surrounding the couple. I then combined those images with closer views of Emily and Irving, their hands, expressions, and reactions to keep the emotional focus on them.
The exterior balcony and entrance also gave us opportunities to create portraits with a different visual feeling from the indoor ceremony and reception. These brighter scenes help balance the film and allow the couple to remain visually connected to the venue’s recognizable Los Angeles architecture.
Establishing the Los Angeles Setting
I included both daytime and nighttime aerial footage to establish the location and place the wedding within the larger Los Angeles environment. The daytime aerials show The Ebell’s architecture and its relationship to the surrounding city, while the nighttime footage introduces a more dramatic view of the illuminated venue.
The aerial sequences are not included simply as decoration. They help transition between parts of the story, provide visual breathing room, and give viewers a clearer sense of where the celebration took place. The final nighttime aerial also creates a natural conclusion, pulling away from the celebration after the couple’s final portraits.
Shaping a Nonlinear Wedding Story
I did not edit Emily and Irving’s film as a simple timeline of events. The opening reception footage creates an energetic hook before the story moves back into the ceremony and earlier parts of the wedding day.
From there, the film moves between bridal preparations, wedding details, ceremony moments, couple portraits, speeches, bridal-party interactions, dancing, and nighttime exterior portraits. This structure allows the film to alternate between emotional, elegant, and energetic moments rather than placing every event in the exact order in which it happened.
The ceremony gives the film its emotional foundation, while the speeches add personality and context. The band and dance floor then bring the celebration to its highest level of energy. By combining these elements, I was able to create a short highlight film that still reflects the range of experiences throughout the day.

I am an FAA Part 107-certified drone pilot and review local flight restrictions before every wedding. Drone coverage cannot be guaranteed near airports, controlled airspace, crowded areas, or locations where the venue or local authorities prohibit flight.

10. Can we choose the music or style for our wedding film?
Yes. I welcome your input regarding the overall feeling of your film, whether you prefer something romantic, emotional, elegant, energetic, modern, cinematic, or documentary-inspired.
I use professionally licensed music and select tracks that complement the emotion and pacing of your wedding. You are welcome to share examples of songs, genres, or films you enjoy, although the final music must be available through my licensed music libraries.
11. Who will film our wedding?
When your proposal identifies me as the lead filmmaker, I will personally film your wedding and oversee its creative direction and editing.
For weddings requiring additional coverage, I work with trusted videographers who understand my filming style, equipment, and production standards. If an associate filmmaker is scheduled to lead your coverage, that information will be clearly disclosed in your proposal before you book.
12. Is a second videographer included?
A second videographer is included in selected collections and can also be added as an optional service.
I generally recommend two filmmakers when the couple is getting ready in separate locations, the wedding takes place across multiple venues, the ceremony requires several camera positions, or important events happen simultaneously. A second filmmaker also provides more guest coverage, additional ceremony angles, and greater flexibility during portraits, cocktail hour, and the reception.
13. Can we receive the raw wedding footage?
Yes. Raw footage is available as an optional add-on and may include the original video clips and audio files recorded during your wedding.
Because I record using professional camera settings and a flat color profile, raw footage may appear less saturated and polished than the completed wedding film. Raw footage is not fully edited, color graded, stabilized, or mixed unless otherwise stated. The file format, organization, delivery method, and storage period will be explained in your proposal.
14. Can we request revisions to our wedding film?
Yes. Reasonable revisions may be available according to the collection and revision policy stated in your agreement.
Revisions can include changes such as correcting a name, replacing a particular shot, or adjusting a specific part of the film. Major structural changes, an entirely different creative direction, licensed-music replacements, or additional versions may require an additional editing fee.
15. Do you charge travel fees for Los Angeles weddings?
Travel within the service area identified in your proposal is included. Additional charges may apply for extended mileage, overnight accommodations, airfare, parking, venue access fees, or permits.
Any anticipated travel expenses will be disclosed before you sign the agreement, so there will be no unexpected destination or transportation charges.
16. Can we add additional coverage hours?
Yes. Additional hours can be added before the wedding or requested on the wedding day when availability allows.

17. Do you offer vertical wedding teasers or social-media reels?
Yes. Vertical teaser films and short social-media edits are available with selected collections or as optional add-ons.
These edits are formatted specifically for mobile viewing and can feature moments from your preparation, ceremony, portraits, reception, or dance floor. Availability, film length, and delivery timing will be stated in your proposal.
18. How do you record our vows, ceremony, and speeches?
I use multiple professional audio sources to preserve important moments clearly. Depending on the venue and event, this may include wireless microphones, direct recordings from the DJ or venue sound system, and independent backup recorders.

19. What happens if a camera or audio recorder fails?
I bring backup cameras, audio recorders, batteries, memory cards, and other essential equipment to every wedding. Important moments such as the ceremony and speeches are generally captured with multiple cameras and redundant audio sources whenever the timeline and venue allow.
After the wedding, the footage is organized and backed up before the editing process begins.
20. Will you coordinate with our photographer and wedding planner?
Yes. I regularly coordinate with photographers, planners, coordinators, DJs, and venue teams to create a realistic timeline and avoid unnecessary interruptions.
Before the wedding, I can review the schedule and identify the time needed for preparation, portraits, venue details, ceremony coverage, and reception events. On the wedding day, I work collaboratively with the other vendors so both photography and videography can capture the necessary moments efficiently.
